Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making a business and its pages the answer that Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, featured snippets and People Also Ask, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot give when someone asks a question. MIS Services provides answer engine optimization services to businesses across the United States on published plans from $399 per month, month-to-month, with no guaranteed placements. The work covers question research, answer-first content, sourced facts, entity and Business Profile consistency, crawler access and monthly measurement. What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making a business, and the pages that describe it, the answer that a search or AI tool gives when someone asks a question. That answer might be a featured snippet or a People Also Ask entry on Google, an AI Overview or AI Mode response, or a cited answer inside ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude or Microsoft Copilot. AEO is a label for a set of tasks, not a brand and not a guaranteed channel, and vendors define it in different ways.
The abbreviation is crowded. When we searched Google for “aeo services” from Long Island on October 15, 2026, the results included a local pack of American Eagle clothing stores, and the retailer trades on the NYSE under the ticker AEO. Customs agencies also use AEO for the Authorised Economic Operator status, a supply-chain security program. That is why this page writes Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) in full, and why entity clarity, making it obvious which business you are, is part of the work.
Google is direct about the overlap. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI features says that, from Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and so still SEO. We agree with the substance, and still run AEO as its own line of work, because the questions people ask, the way a good answer is written and the places an answer can come from need their own research, writing and measurement.
What does an answer-first page look like?
Take a customer question such as how long a roof replacement takes. An answer-first page puts a plain two-sentence answer under a heading that repeats the question, then lists what changes the answer, names the source of any figure, and shows the business’s real name, address and hours elsewhere on the page. A reader gets the answer in seconds, and an engine can lift the same passage without guessing.
Why Do Answer Engines Matter to Your Business?
Many searches now show an answer before any website. Pew Research Center analyzed March 2025 browsing data from 900 U.S. adults and found that Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% of visits without a summary, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits.
| Measure | Result |
|---|---|
| Share of all Google searches that produced an AI summary | 18% |
| Searches that began with a question word (who, what, when, why) and produced one | 60% |
| One- or two-word searches that produced one | 8% |
| Searches of ten words or more that produced one | 53% |
Two things follow. AI summaries appear most often on question-shaped searches, so question research is where AEO work starts. And being named or cited in the answer is worth tracking next to clicks, because the answer is what the reader sees first.
For local buyers, a 2026 BrightLocal survey of 1,002 U.S. adults found that use of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools for local business recommendations rose from 6% to 45% in a year, making them the third most popular source. BrightLocal sells local SEO software, so read it as a vendor survey. It also found that 40% of respondents trust AI tools for local searches and 32% do not.
Neither study says how many leads an AEO program produces, and we do not claim a number. They show where attention is moving.
How Do the Major Answer Engines Choose Their Sources?
Each engine documents sourcing differently, and none publishes a ranking formula. This is what their own pages say.
| Engine | What the documentation says | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | No additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. No special schema, AI text files or markup. Responses can use query fan-out, meaning several related searches at once. | Crawling, snippet controls, content quality, Business Profile and Merchant Center details |
| Google featured snippets and People Also Ask | Chosen automatically by Google’s systems. A page cannot be marked as one, and featured snippets can also appear inside People Also Ask. | Snippet controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet, and clear question-and-answer writing |
| ChatGPT search | Responses that use web search may include citations. It sometimes uses partner search providers. Placement is not guaranteed. | Allow OAI-SearchBot and OpenAI’s published IP ranges |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in search results, not to train foundation models. Each answer includes numbered citations. | Allow PerplexityBot and its published IP ranges |
| Claude | Responses that use web search include citations. Anthropic runs three bots: ClaudeBot (training), Claude-User (user-directed requests) and Claude-SearchBot (search quality). | robots.txt rules for each bot |
| Microsoft Copilot | Microsoft says Copilot is powered by Bing’s search index. AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations across Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partners. | Bing indexing, IndexNow, Bing Places details and page structure |
The engines disagree on some advice that circulates online. Google says you do not need special structured data or new files, while Microsoft’s guidance recommends schema, descriptive headings and direct question-and-answer pairs, and says assistants parse pages into smaller pieces. Microsoft says nothing guarantees selection, and Google says indexing and serving are never guaranteed.
Crawler access is the most concrete control. Each engine documents which bot to allow, and OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt change for its search systems to adjust, while Perplexity says up to 24 hours. Voice assistants are often listed under AEO, but we make no voice claims because we did not verify any official documentation on how they choose sources.
What Do Our Answer Engine Optimization Services Include?
Six workstreams, each tied to something the platforms document or something we can measure.
Question and intent research
We list the questions your buyers really ask, using Search Console queries, People Also Ask boxes, sales calls and support email, then group them by intent. Question-word searches trigger AI summaries most often, so this comes first.
Answer-first content
Each priority page gets a plain answer under a question heading, then supporting detail, lists or tables where they help, and a visible date. Pages stay written for readers, not chopped into fragments for machines.
Sourced facts and first-hand detail
Google says unique, useful content will likely influence AI search presence over time more than any other tip in its guide. We add your real process, numbers and photos, and cite primary sources.
Entity and Business Profile consistency
We align your name, address, phone, hours, categories and descriptions across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places and major listings, and add Organization markup, which Google says can help it disambiguate your organization.
Structured data and crawler access
We check robots.txt and CDN rules for Google’s, Bing’s, OpenAI’s, Perplexity’s and Anthropic’s search bots, confirm key pages are indexed and snippet-eligible, and add markup that matches visible text, for clarity.
Measurement and reporting
Monthly checks of Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance, Google Analytics 4 and call tracking such as CallRail, plus a fixed question list re-checked across engines and written up plainly.
What Does AEO Work Consist Of, and What Is Still Unproven?
We split AEO tasks into what platform documentation supports and what is still opinion. Expect any agency to do the same.
Supported by platform documentation
- Pages that are crawlable, indexed and eligible to show with a snippet (Google), and access for the documented search bots of OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic.
- Descriptive headings, concise question-and-answer pairs, lists and tables, and key information kept in HTML rather than hidden in tabs or placed only in images (Microsoft, October 2025).
- Accurate local business details: Google’s guide points to Business Profile and Merchant Center, and Microsoft points local businesses to Bing Places.
Unproven, contested or unsupported
- llms.txt. Google says Google Search ignores these files, so they neither help nor harm there. The OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic crawler pages we read do not say the file affects inclusion. We treat it as optional housekeeping.
- Chunking content into tiny pieces. Google says there is no such requirement, while Microsoft says Copilot parses pages into sections. We write self-contained sections for readers and do not fragment pages.
- FAQ markup for rich results. Google stopped showing the FAQ rich result on May 7, 2026 and removed its documentation in June 2026 (Search Central updates). Visible FAQ sections still help readers, and Microsoft lists them among helpful formats. We never promise a rich result.
- How closely citations follow rankings. Ahrefs reported in July 2025 that about 76% of cited AI Overview pages ranked in the top 10, then in March 2026 that about 38% did. Its August 2025 study found that 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appeared in Google’s top 10 for the same prompt. These are vendor studies with different methods, so we use them only to say that rankings and citations are related but not identical.
- Inauthentic mentions and page volume. Google says seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it seems, and that making separate pages for every fan-out query variation, mainly to manipulate responses, violates its scaled content abuse policy.
- Conversion multipliers. Several vendor pages say AI-referred visitors convert several times better. We found no verifiable source, so we publish none.
What Is the Difference Between AEO, SEO and GEO?
The three labels overlap, and vendors define them differently. Google treats AEO and GEO as names for work on AI search experiences and calls that work SEO. Microsoft describes its AI citation reporting as an “early step toward Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) tooling” in its Bing announcement. The 2023 research paper that named GEO, presented at KDD 2024, tested methods for raising visibility in generative engine answers and reported gains of up to 40% on its own benchmark.
| Label | Scope as we use it | Where the result appears | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Making pages findable and useful in search | Ranked results, maps and local packs | Google: the best practices stay relevant for AI features |
| AEO | Becoming the chosen answer to a specific question | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, AI answer boxes, cited AI answers | Google: optimizing for AI search is optimizing for the search experience |
| GEO | Wider work on how generative engines retrieve, cite and describe a brand | Mentions and citations inside AI-written answers | The 2023 paper: quotations, statistics and cited sources worked best in its tests; keyword stuffing did not help |
In practice a business needs the same foundation for all three. For the wider program, including prompt testing and third-party citations, see our generative engine optimization services. For Google’s AI Overviews specifically, read how to rank on AI Overview. The rest of this page covers AEO as we run it.
How Do People Actually Search for AEO?
We checked our own data on October 15, 2026, and report only what it shows. Bing Webmaster Tools keyword research for the United States, August 16 to October 15, 2026, returned impressions for ten AEO-related phrases. These are Bing impressions only, not Google data and not monthly search volume.
| Phrase | Bing impressions |
|---|---|
| what is aeo | 567 |
| aeo meaning | 317 |
| aeo vs seo | 260 |
| generative engine optimization | 217 |
| aeo vs geo | 134 |
| answer engine optimization | 103 |
| seo vs aeo | 80 |
| aeo marketing | 66 |
| aeo seo | 24 |
| aeo optimization | 13 |
Of the 1,781 impressions across those ten phrases, 884 (about 50%) were definition searches (“what is aeo” and “aeo meaning”) and 474 (about 27%) were comparisons (“aeo vs seo”, “seo vs aeo” and “aeo vs geo”). Commercial phrases such as “aeo agency”, “aeo services” and “answer engine optimization agency”, “services”, “company” or “consulting” returned 0, as did every local variant we tried for New York, Long Island and Amityville. Bing does not report very low volumes, so 0 means below Bing’s reporting threshold, not that nobody searches.
Google Trends for the United States over the past 12 months shows relative interest, not volume. Averages read off the chart were roughly 48 for “answer engine optimization”, 16 for “aeo services”, 9 for “aeo agency”, 3 for “answer engine optimization services” and about 0 for “answer engine optimization agency”. Google Autosuggest the same day completed “aeo agency” with countries and cities (India, UK, Malaysia, USA, Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne, Dubai, Mumbai) and best-of phrases such as “best aeo agency in usa 2026”. A U.S. web search for “AEO agency” returned mostly best-of lists and directories, which points to comparison intent.
The measurable demand we can see is informational. People ask what AEO is and how it differs from SEO and GEO before they look for a vendor, and the vendor searches that exist lean toward comparison. We could not obtain Google monthly volumes that day, so we state none and claim no demand we did not measure. This page therefore answers the definition and comparison questions first.
How Do You Choose an AEO Agency?
Many pages offering AEO are SEO services under a new name. That is not automatically a problem, since Google calls the work SEO, but it should change what you ask. Google’s guidance on hiring an SEO now says to check whether a provider’s AEO or GEO advice is aligned with Google’s official guidance, to ask whether it cites official documentation, and to look elsewhere if anyone guarantees a number-one ranking. Its third-party guidance adds that no third-party tool has access to Google’s internal ranking data.
| Question | Why it is fair | What a verifiable answer looks like |
|---|---|---|
| What will change on my site and profiles each month? | Google advises caution with firms that will not explain what they intend to do. | An itemized list of pages, profile fields and fixes. |
| How is this different from the SEO I would get anyway? | Google calls AI search optimization SEO. | A plain statement of the overlap and a list of the answer-specific parts. |
| Which official documentation supports each recommendation? | Google suggests asking whether advice cites official guidance. | Links to official pages, with opinion labeled as opinion. |
| How do you test answers, and how often? | Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode can show different responses and links. | A fixed question list, the engines, the dates and full results, shown as a sample. |
| Which numbers come from first-party tools? | Third-party tools cannot see Google’s internal data. | Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Analytics and call tracking in every report. |
| Do you guarantee citations or rankings? | Google says no one can guarantee a number-one ranking. | No. Commitments are to a baseline, specific fixes and reporting. |
| Who has access to my accounts, and what is the contract? | Google suggests read-only Search Console access while an audit is being done. | Read-only access first, written change notes, month-to-month terms. |
| Can I see client results, with the measure and the period? | Results without definitions cannot be compared. | What was measured, over what period, and who reported it. |
Where MIS fits: MIS Services Inc has been in business since 2014, 12 years, and has worked with 375 clients to date across the United States. Our team is in-house, with no offshore work. We are an SEO and web agency that also does AEO and GEO, and we say so. Local businesses can also see our pages for New York and Long Island.
What Results Can You Expect and How Do We Measure Them?
Results vary by site, competition, the questions involved and how much of the foundation is already in place, and we promise no placements. We commit to a baseline, specific fixes and monthly reporting of what moved.
What we measure
- Question coverage. For a fixed list of your customers’ questions, whether your pages hold a featured snippet or People Also Ask entry, appear in Google’s AI features, or are cited in ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude answers, re-checked monthly. Results are a sample on the dates we ran them, not a census.
- First-party AI reporting. Search Console’s generative AI report, which shows impressions only, and Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance, which reports citations across Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partner integrations, with intent and citation-share views in preview since June 2026.
- Business outcomes. Google Analytics 4 sessions and conversions, calls tracked with call tracking such as CallRail, and Business Profile actions.
For context on our own site, Search Console’s generative AI report for misservices.us shows 851 impressions in Google’s AI features between May 28 and August 25, 2026, about 85% of them from the United States. They are impressions, not clicks, because that report has no click column. They describe our site and are not a result we promise you.
Across the 10 client websites we manage, client-reported traffic is up 35% and inbound calls are landing. Those sites are listed in our SEO portfolio. The figure is client-reported, has no stated time period and spans industries. It describes overall traffic rather than answer-engine results, and it is not a forecast for your site.
On timing, Google says crawling can take from several days to several months depending on how often it decides a page needs refreshing. Content, entity and citation work builds over months. Our plans run on a 90-day cycle with a report each month.
Our Answer Engine Optimization Process, Baseline to Monthly Reporting
Baseline and question research
We build the question list, check what each engine says about your business today, and record which sources and competitors are cited. You get the baseline in writing.
Foundation fixes
Crawler and CDN access for each engine’s search bot, indexing and snippet eligibility, page speed, and matching business details across your site, Business Profile and Bing Places.
Answer-first content and entity work
Priority pages are rewritten or added with the answer first, sourced facts and visible dates. Markup is added where it matches visible text, and profiles are brought into line.
Measure and iterate
Each month we re-run the question list, review Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and Analytics data, and send a plain-language report with the next actions.
Start with a free audit. Businesses that depend on map results can add local SEO services, and sites that need more content can add content marketing.
What Do AEO Services Cost, and Which Option Fits You?
Published AEO prices are scarce and vary widely. DesignRush, an agency directory that says some agencies pay for sponsored placement, estimates that answer engine optimization costs $1,000 to $3,500 per month for small businesses and startups and $4,000 to $12,000 per month for mid-tier retainers. That is a directory estimate, not a quote. SEO.com’s AEO page says businesses can expect to pay $1,500 to $10,000 per month in 2026 and that its own services start at $3,000 per month.
DesignRush lists the cost drivers as website complexity, content production, technical fixes, authority building such as digital PR, and tracking. Our plans, shown below, are $399, $699 and $1,499 per month, with the page count capped in each plan so you can see what is covered.
| Factor | DIY with free tools | Typical AEO agency | MIS Services plans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Owners with time who can edit their own site | Brands that want a large content and PR program | Businesses that want implementation and plain reporting at a published price |
| Cost | Your time, plus any tools you buy | Directory estimate: $1,000 to $3,500 per month (small business), $4,000 to $12,000 (mid-tier) | $399, $699 or $1,499 per month |
| Baseline | A handful of questions checked by hand | Varies, so ask to see the question set | A fixed question list across Google’s AI features, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude |
| Reporting | Manual | Varies, so ask what comes from first-party data | Monthly written report |
| Contract | Not applicable | Varies | Month-to-month |
| Guarantees | None possible | Be cautious of any | None. No placement or citation is guaranteed |
Doing it yourself is realistic for a small site: Google says a small local business can probably do much of the work itself. Hire help when the work is large or time is short. All our pricing plans are published.
